I. Overview
The Game of FairPlay is an organization that is geared towards promoting fairness in the global game of association football or ‘soccer’. It will establish the first world ‘Game of FairPlay’ Football Congress (WFC) in Istanbul, Turkey to run in September 2008. The organisation is dedicated to help guide the concept of fair play in football. In particular, the WFC aim to set a new agenda for concerted action to cultivate “a global understanding and respect of national values and culture which reflect the game of fair play in Football”.
This can only be achieved if national football associations and international governing bodies such as FIFA and the Confederations are fully engaged. There is a natural partnership between fair play in the game of football and the concepts driving the WFC. By its very nature football is about participation, teamwork and co-operation while playing within a competitive environment. Football is also about inclusion within a world community and at a national level about the value of citizenship.
Today football brings individuals and communities together, highlighting commonalties and bridging cultural, political or ethnic divides. There are also challenges. Today the game itself is continually on trial from many fair play perspectives. There is too much political interference; there is match-fixing and there are other forms of corruption that thrive on the back of the growing financial importance of the game. Yet football still provides a means for participants to learn many skills such as discipline, confidence and leadership. It can offer core principles such as tolerance, cooperation and respect.
Football shows us the value of effort and how to manage victory, as well as defeat. When these positive aspects of game are emphasized, football becomes a powerful social vehicle for good in the world. An international football gathering, such as the WFC is intended to help decision makers in the game to discuss how fair play can achieve desirable social goals off the field as well as organizing teams to score goals n the pitch. It is intended to base the WFC in Turkey as an annual event.
